A Painter’s Paradise

For me, my favourite memories of Holland and France revolve around art and family. Beautiful art wrapped up with rare memories of a family I hadn’t seen in 30 years.

Time spent with my daughter before things changed. Before she became too independent to need me. Precious memories of her as a teenager are intermingled with my memories of Amsterdam and Paris.

When I see images of Monet’s Gardens or the canals of Amsterdam, I think of her. Walks along the Seine perusing the stalls and buying posters. Visiting the Musée de l’Orangerie and seeing Monet’s Water Lilies. A bike tour to Monet’s Gardens where willow trees dip long tendrils in the water, creating hidden places begging to be explored.

Even my uncle who we stayed with is a talented artist. It surrounded me. Oh, and did I mention my daughter herself is also a talented artist?

Originally, this was an itinerary created for artists, those looking for those magical places in Europe to paint. Unfortunately, due to changes in circumstances this trip did not happen. But I have often thought it could be the inspiration you need. To explore and get creative.

This itinerary starts in Amsterdam, a beautiful, quirky city and then onto Paris, the City of Lights, a place where everything is a painting. Staying in Montmartre, an area that at one point or another has been home to artists Salvador Dalí, Amedeo Modigliani, Claude Monet, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Piet Mondrian, Pablo Picasso, Camille Pissarro and Vincent van Gogh.

And with a visit to Monet’s Gardens thrown in before we head to Provence, home of the lavender fields, our artist trail is complete.

Imagine the paintings that will emerge from this trip? The inspiration and ideas!

There is no shortage of inspiration. From whole fields of lavender to single stems the only question you will ask yourself is

“Did I bring enough paper?”

Kick-off your creative journey by visiting the Van Gogh Museum and seeing my most favourite of all van Gogh paintings.

In Paris, everywhere you look is a painting to capture. From the iconic sights of the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre and the Arc de Triomphe to Montmartre once home to van Gogh, Salvador Dali, Modigliani and so many more great artists. From a cobblestoned laneway to the textured buildings you will want to capture it all.

There is nothing quite like the experience of a visit to the Musée de l’Orangerie to see Claude Monet’s Water Lilies followed by a visit to his gardens in Giverny. An experience I find hard to describe. You may also like My Tour to Monet’s Gardens.

And of course, what more could an artist ask for than to capture glorious lavender fields of the Provence Region. Literally a “Painter’s Paradise” that will leave you with inspiration for years to come.
